This is a gorgeous 1988 American Eagle gold proof four-coin box set. This impressive set features 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz. and 1/10 ounce pure gold proof coins (1.85 troy oz fine gold for the complete set). This beautiful set was the first 4-coin gold proof set issued by the United States Mint.

The obverse (front) of each coin is based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens design used on U.S. twenty dollar gold pieces produced from 1907 to 1933 and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coin designs of all time. The 1988 date is in roman numerals - similar to the original Saint Gaudens gold double eagle design issued in 1907. The reverse displays a "family of eagles" theme.

This set also includes the original U.S. Mint packaging: a beautiful velvet presentation case, coin capsules, outer cardboard box, and certificate of authenticity. The exact same 4-coin set for the current year (2002) sells for $995 directly from the U.S. Mint. This first year 4-coin set is a lot harder to find than recent issues and is priced to sell. This set would make a wonderful addition to any coin collection - absolutely gorgeous!!
